Grandma accused of shooting grandson to death

Police say a 74-year-old Detroit grandmother shot and killed her 17-year-old grandson, MyFoxDetroit reports.

Jonathan Hoffman was shot several times but managed to call 911, police say. He later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Authorities took the teen's 74-year-old grandmother, who has not been named publicly, into police custody. They told MyFoxDetroit the woman was not cooperating with authorities.

MyFoxDetroit reports Hoffman had moved into the condo his grandmother shared with Hoffman's 86-year-old grandfather about six months ago. Police believe the two had a volatile relationship, and authorities had responded to a domestic violence dispute in March.

One local teen who identified himself only as a friend of Hoffman's told MyFoxDetroit Hoffman was a good person.

"He was a great friend," the teen told MyFoxDetroit. "He was always there for me if I had any problems, but honestly like I'm shocked."

Wiig Bids Farewell to \'SNL\'

  • kristenwiig640

    Kristen Wiig (Reuters)

Kristen Wiig got a musical sendoff on the season finale of "Saturday Night Live" as the popular and versatile cast member made her exit after seven years.

In the show's final sketch, guest host Mick Jagger played the principal at a high school graduation and brought up Wiig, in cap and gown, as "one particular student who is leaving this summer."

She danced in turn with Jagger, cast members and executive producer Lorne Michaels to the tune of the Rolling Stones classic "She's a Rainbow." Then the ensemble sang another Stones hit, "Ruby Tuesday," with its line, "still I'm gonna miss you."

Wiig appeared to be holding back tears.

Though NBC had made no prior announcement of her departure, it comes as no surprise. She starred in and co-wrote the hit comedy "Bridesmaids," and even before that had notable roles in "Friends With Kids," "Paul," "Adventureland" and "Knocked Up," among other films. She has six more in various stages of development.

Wiig's almost limitless range of characters on "SNL" has included neurotic attention-seeker Penelope; Kat, half of the musical duo Garth and Kat (alongside Fred Armisen); and such real-life notables as Bjork, Kathie Lee Gifford and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis have also been reported to be leaving "SNL," though Michaels recently said any decision on cast changes will wait until the summer.

Facebook\'s Zuckerberg Updates Status to Married

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his status to "married" on Saturday.

Zuckerberg and 27-year-old Priscilla Chan tied the knot at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, Calif., home, capping a busy week for the couple, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple. The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history Friday. And Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28, the person said.

The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years, the person said.

Zuckerberg designed the ring featuring "a very simple ruby," according to the person who gave the following characterization of the wedding.

The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard before fewer than 100 guests, who all thought they were there to celebrate Chan's graduation.

Even after the IPO, Zuckerberg remains Facebook's single largest shareholder, with 503.6 million shares. And he controls the company with 56 percent of its voting stock.

The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago, has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people.

Zuckerberg founded Facebook at Harvard in 2004.

He was named as Time's Person of the Year in 2010, at age 26.

G-8 Warns North Korea About Further Provocations

  • G820122.jpg

May 19, 2012: From left, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and German Chancellor Angela Merkel make their way to a photo opportunity at the G-8 Summit Saturday, at Camp David, Md.AP

The Group of Eight world leaders has warned North Korea that it faces more sanctions if it continues to threaten the stability of the region with provocative acts such as its failed long-range rocket launch in April.

The U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and Britain issued a declaration on the results of the two-day summit. It includes a statement about the G-8's concerns over North Korea's nuclear program, including its uranium enrichment program.

"We affirm our will to call on the UN Security Council to take action, in response to additional (North Korea) acts, including ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests," the declaration reads.

North Korea's state media didn't immediately respond to the G-8's warning.

The United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions against North Korea after its first nuclear test in 2006 and stepped up sanctions after its second test in 2009, hoping to derail the country's rogue nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

North Korea earlier this month threatened to bolster its nuclear arsenal at any cost.

President Barak Obama said Saturday that world leaders also made progress at Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland on other international issues at the summit, including on Iran and Syria.

Chinese coal miner rescued after 17 days in mine

A Chinese coal miner has been rescued after being trapped underground for 17 days by an underground flood that killed at least 10 others.

State television and the official Xinhua News Agency say rescuers brought 39-year-old Si Li out of the Junyuan No. 2 Coal Mine in the northeastern city of Hegang on Saturday. The reports Sunday said he was hospitalized in stable condition.

Xinhua said 28 miners were in the mine when it flooded May 2. Ten died, three are still missing and the rest escaped as the water rose or were rescued shortly after the disaster.

China Central Television said Si survived in part by eating straw bags used in the mine.

Searchers Scour River for 4 Missing After Boat Crash

  • Mississippi River Boa_640.jpg

May 19, 2012: Des Moines County officer Kevin Glendening, foreground, drags the Mississippi River as officer Brad Siegfried, center, and Sheriff Mike Johnstone use sonar to locate four missing people near O'Connel Slough near Burlington, Iowa.AP

Crews searched Saturday for four people missing after an overnight boat crash on the Mississippi River in Iowa, although one official said it was mostly a recovery effort.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources spokesman Kevin Baskins said the timing of the collision, about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, made it difficult for rescuers to find people in the water. So, he said, the effort is "leaning more toward recovery" than rescue.

"Officers in boats, at this point, looking for anything we can find," Baskins said, describing the search.

Two jon boats --flat-bottomed boats often made of aluminum -- crashed in the O'Connell Slough area of the river, near Burlington, according to the department. One of the boats was carrying 11 people; the other had a single passenger.

Baskins said eight people pulled from the water have been hospitalized. At least one person suffered serious injuries and was flown to an Iowa City hospital, he said. The others were taken to a Burlington hospital.

The names of the missing and injured people have not been released, pending notification of their families.

It's not clear how the crash happened. Baskins said it could take weeks to interview all the victims, collect evidence and reconstruct the crash.

"You don't have skid marks and stuff in boating accidents," he said.

Burlington is in southeast Iowa on the Illinois border, about 200 miles north of St. Louis on the river.

6 school buses crash on Georgia interstate, over 50 injured

A chain collision that damaged six school buses and a car on Saturday trapped one driver east of Atlanta and forced medical officials to examine more than 50 other people for injuries, authorities said.

The accident happened on Interstate 20 while the buses were taking students from Burke County near the South Carolina state line to a Six Flags amusement park outside of Atlanta, said Johnny Jenkins, chairman of the Burke County Board of Education.

Traffic on the highway had slowed approaching Covington because of a closed lane, said Gordy Wright, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the accident. As the buses reduced speed, one bus was struck from behind by another school bus, setting off a chain collision that damaged six buses and a car. The accident temporarily shut down westbound traffic on the major highway.

Rescue crews had to cut a bus driver, Angela Benjamin Jones, 44, from the wreckage, said Amy Nunnally, a spokeswoman for the Burke County school system. The driver, who was conscious and able to communicate with emergency workers, was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and listed in stable condition.

Two other people suffered injuries, police said. About 50 others were examined at regional hospitals for possible injuries after the wreck. Aside from the bus driver, school officials said none of the injuries appeared serious.

"Just a few bruises, scrapes," Nunnally said. "Nothing bad happened to any of our children."

I\'ll Have Another wins Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE (AP) I'll Have Another overtook Bodemeister, blazing down the stretch to win the Preakness in the final strides Saturday and keep alive his hopes of winning the Triple Crown.

In a race that was a virtual repeat of the Kentucky Derby finish, I'll Have Another raced from behind to beat pace-setter Bodemeister.

In the rematch, I'll Have Another won by a neck after winning the Derby by 1 1/2 lengths.

I'll Have Another now has a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The Belmont Stakes, the last of the Triple Crown races, is June 9.

I'll Have Another covered the 1 3/16 miles in 1:55.94.

The winner, second-favorite behind Bodemeister, paid $8.40, $3.80 and $2.80. Bodemeister returned $3.20 and $2.80, and Creative Cause paid $3.60 to show.

Bodemeister broke to the lead and held onto first place for much of the race, but as the horses headed for home, I'll Have Another bolted past the field, took aim at Bodemeister and won the charge to the finish line.

It was a painful defeat for Bodemeister trainer Bob Baffert, who was seeking his sixth Preakness victory.

I'll Have Another is the first horse since Big Brown in 2008 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

''He has a tremendous kick in the end,'' winning jockey Mario Gutierrez said. ''It's not me, it's him. He just keeps proving people wrong.''

Trainer Doug O'Neill, elated with his first Preakness win, said: ''When I saw Mario get him in stride midstretch, I just had faith.''

I\'ll Have Another wins Preakness, nears Triple Crown

I'll Have Another and jockey Mario Gutiérrez are one race away from winning the coveted Triple Crown after the duo exploded from the pack to speed past race favorite Bodemeister and snag the win at the Preakness Stakes.

Gutiérrez and I'll Have Another came out of the gate on the outside and pulled into fourth place down the opening stretch where the horse sat for most of his way all through the back stretch. Unlike in the Kentucky Derby, I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill told Guitérrez to get involved in the race early.

In a move reminiscent of two weeks ago at Churchill Downs, around the final turn I'll Have Another slipped into third before exploding from outside with an eight of the mile left to run down Bodemeister before hitting the finish line with a time of 1:55.94.

“I can't even put it into words, it's just incredible" said O'Neill, according to USA Today. "What a ride. Mario was so patient. We're thinking Triple Crown, baby. Come on, why not."

Bodemeister entered the race as a 3-2 favorite over the Derby winner, who came into Pimlico at 3-1. But Bodemeister competed for the sixth time this season and third time in five weeks.

What a ride. Mario was so patient. We're thinking Triple Crown, baby. Come on, why not.

- Doug O'Neill, trainer of I'll Have Another

I'll Have Another is just the fourth horse to win the Preakness from the No. 9 post, and first since Funny Cide in 2003. If all goes well, I'll Have Another will be in New York in three weeks at the Belmont Stakes to try for the Holy Grail of American through breed horse racing, the Triple Crown.

The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed back in 1978.

For jockey Guitérrez the win is just one another notch on an amazing journey that he has taken in the last year. The 25-year old native of Mexico didn't know that he would even be racing in the Kentucky Deby until he led I'll Have Another to wins in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby, earning them a trip to Churchill Downs.

“As a jockey, you dream, you wish you'll be there [at the Kentucky Derby], but you never expect it to happen,” Gutiérrez said. “Every jockey trains to go there and ride in that huge race. I'm so excited and so happy that it happened to me.”

The winner, second-favorite behind Bodemeister, paid $8.40, $3.80 and $2.80. Bodemeister returned $3.20 and $2.80, and Creative Cause paid $3.60 to show.

I'll Have Another is the first horse since Big Brown in 2008 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

NAACP announces support of same-sex marriage

  • Obama_Wardman.jpg

April 3, 2012: President Obama speaks at an Associated Press luncheon in Washington.AP

The NAACP announced Saturday the 103-year-old black civil rights group is supporting same-sex marriage.

The group's board of directors made the decision at a meeting this weekend, saying it was a "continuation of its historic commitment to equal protection under the law."

The decision follows President Obama's recent support of gay marriage, a move that threatened to divide key parts of the Democratic voting base -- the gay and black communities.

"The mission of the (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has always been to ensure political, social and economic equality of all people," said Roslyn M. Brock, chairman of the board. "We have and will oppose efforts to codify discrimination into law."

Black religious leaders -- who traditionally have opposed same-sex marriage -- originally opposed the president's recent decision but appear to have softened their position in recent days.

Pastor Emmett Burns said on the Sunday following the president's May 9 announcement that he opposed the decision but this week reportedly said he would vote for Obama.

Burns, a delegate in the Maryland state legislature, was among the lawmakers who strongly opposed a same-sex marriage bill that passed in the Assembly this year. He helped defeat the bill last year.

Conservatives think the issue could still split the president's base.

"He's on the wrong side of this issue," Deneen Barille, a black conservative told Fox News earlier this week. "He's going against the values of black Americans voters. … He's splitting his base. He's going for the gay community versus the black community where he has thrown them under the bus."

However, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force hailed the NAACP's decision Saturday.

"This is truly a historic moment," the group said in a statement. "The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force could not be more thrilled."

This gay marriage issue marks the second time in the last year that a decision by the Obama administration has threatened to split the president's base.

The administration has withheld federal approval on the Keystone XL oil pipeline over environmental concerns. The decision has pleased environmentalists but has upset some union members who say construction of the pipeline, from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast, would create thousands of jobs.

Should the administration grant the permits, Obama could arguably lose the environmental vote.

Democratic strategist Ben Tulchin said earlier this week the question of whether either issue will hurt the president's re-election efforts must be viewed in the context of the 2012 election cycle.

"Two years ago, with the president not having a named candidate, this might have been an issue," said Tulchin, president of the San Francisco-based Tulchin Research. "But is the president's base going to flock to Mitt Romney, absolutely not."

He said the Keystone issue further illustrates the point, considering that state's run by Republicans are pushing anti-union legislation.

Democratic voters are saying "we have guys who are trying to protect union rights versus guys who are trying to screw workers."

Blind Chinese Activist, Family Arrive in the US

  • China Blind Activist_640.jpg

May 19, 2012: Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, left, pushed in a wheelchair from an elevator to a sky bridge that is connected to a plane at Beijing International airport.AP

A blind Chinese legal activist who was suddenly allowed to leave the country arrived in the U.S. on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng had been hurriedly taken from a hospital hours earlier and put on a plane for the United States after Chinese authorities suddenly told him to pack and prepare to leave. He arrived Saturday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport, outside New York City.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

"I'm very happy at the news that he's on his way and I look forward to welcoming him and his family tonight and to working with him on his course of study," Cohen said.

Chen will live at the Washington Square Village complex, a New York University housing facility where faculty and graduate students reside, an NYU spokesman said.

Before he left China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."

Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."
