NEW YORK â€"  A New York City firefighter lauded for his efforts during 9/11 died after collapsing while battling a warehouse fire, myFOXny.com reports.
Lt. Richard Nappi, a 17-year-veteran of the FDNY, became overheated and collapsed while battling the fire in Brooklyn. While paramedics were treating him, he went into cardiac arrest and later died at a local hospital.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference that Lappi's death marks "a tragic day for New York City."
"He responded with valor to the World Trade Center attacks," Bloomberg said. "He helped save and rebuild the city."
Five other firefighters were injured in the blaze, which was contained about three hours after Lappi's death. One was listed in serious, but stable condition while the others had minor injuries.
