A New Hampshire man killed his girlfriend, then himself after allegedly killing a police chief and injuring four other officers in a hail of gunfire, myFOXboston.com reports.
The chief medical examiner in Greenland, NH said Saturday it appears Cullen Mutrie shot his 26-year-old girlfriend Brittany Tibbetts to death and then turned his gun on himself Thursday.
Earlier, Mutrie allegedly opened fire on officers who had come to his home with a search warrant in what was believed to be a drug bust.Â
The town's police chief, 48-year-old Michael Maloney, was killed in the shooting and four other officers were injured. Officials say they entered the home Friday morning after a tense overnight standoff and found the bodies of Tibbetts and Mutrie.
Maloney, a 26-year-veteran of the police force and a 12-year chief, was only days from retirement when he was killed. Residents remember him as a strong and comforting presence in the town of about 3,500, who was seen doing everything from working traffic details to keeping an eye on concerts.
"He never put his hand up to stop a conversation and always made himself available," Greenland selectman John Vitale said after a memorial at a school Saturday.
Brittany Tibbetts' mother Donna Tibbetts said her daughter was a cosmetologist and an award-winning softball pitcher who had dated Mutrie off and on for about a year and a half.Â
"She cared about him. She must have seen something good in him. That was the type of girl she was. ... I don't want her life to be defined by this one thing because she was a beautiful, caring girl," Donna Tibbetts said.
In the days before his death, Maloney alluded to what would be his final attempt to keep his community safer.
"I have nine more working days left," Maloney told a Board of Selectmen meeting Monday night, "and I have one more item I'm going to clear up."
