NM man faces charges after signing dog up to vote- Former SC first lady hit with big fine for loose dog

A New Mexico man who registered his dog to vote in an apparent attempt to expose flaws in the electoral system may face prosecution.

A Bernalillo County official told KOB-TV Thursday that regardless of his intentions, the unnamed dog-owner had broken the law.

Buddy, a black Labrador, received a voter registration card in the mail after his owner applied with a made-up birth date and Social Security number.

The man, who told KOB-TV he had no intention of actually voting under his dog's name, said the registration was processed and accepted by the county clerk's office.

County clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver called his actions "disheartening," as well as illegal.

"I would warn those individuals who think this type of activity is a joke or a 'gotcha' that, regardless of their intentions, they have broken the law and will therefore have to be subject to due process of law," she said.
