JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The director of a central Arkansas public housing duplex where a mother and her four children have been found dead says a maintenance man discovered them in their bedrooms and that extensive smoke damage was visible in the kitchen.
Police and fire authorities say they don't know what killed the 31-year-old mother and her children, who were all under the age of 11.
Phil Nix, the executive director of the Jacksonville Housing Authority, says the worker entered the duplex Thursday after smelling smoke.
Authorities would not comment on whether the fire may have started in the kitchen, but a police spokeswoman says there was smoke and soot damage throughout the duplex.
Family friend Barbara Brooks says the mother was planning to move away and was about to buy a home.
