CAIRO â" Â Senior Al Qaeda chief Saif al-Adel was arrested at Cairo airport, security officials, cited by AFP, said Wednesday.
An airport official said al-Adel, who was believed to have briefly taken over Al Qaeda's leadership following the death of Usama bin Laden, arrived on an Emirates Airlines flight from Pakistan that had a stopover in Dubai, according to the report.
The reason for al-Adel's trip to Cairo was not revealed.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to al-Adel's arrest over the Aug. 7, 1998 bombings of the United States embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya.
Al-Adel, who is on the FBI's "Most Wanted Terrorists" list, was thought to be affiliated with the Egyptian Islamic Jihad group.
He has been linked also to the 2002 killing of The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan.
The Egyptian citizen is thought to be around 50 years old.
